Coping with Grief After a Loved One’s Passing

Grief is a normal human reaction to the loss of a family member, friend, pet— even a job. Some can develop strategies that work for themselves to come to terms with the loss. However, many are stuck with the emotions associated with grief, eventually affecting their quality of life.

Through our hospice care in Simi Valley, California, we guide people into understanding and recognizing their emotions to deal with grief effectively. Here are some coping mechanisms we recommend:

  • Care for Yourself

Sometimes, grieving people tend to overlook their well-being. Thus, encourage yourself to get enough sleep, eat right, and go for physical activities. Then, make sure to check in with others who are also grieving to do the same.

  • Talk About It

Avoiding the topic of your loved one’s death with friends and other family members can only disrupt the healing process. Celebrate their lives and deeds. Talk about the good things they’ve done or their impact on others.

  • Accept Whatever You Feel

It’s normal to feel a range of emotions when grieving ? anger, guilt, sadness, fear, or anxiety. But if these feelings become overwhelming, and you are stuck with them, don’t be afraid to seek professional help.

  • Consider Grief Counseling

A trained professional can help you handle grief and the emotions associated with it. You can also join a support group to learn their approaches to accepting a loved one’s loss.

Know that you’re not alone. At AMERICUS HOSPICE, INC., we have helped multiple families throughout the grieving process. Feel free to send us an appointment request if you need grief/bereavement counseling or respite care in California.
